A WATER DAMAGE REFERENCE / SAVE OR PRINT
Safety first.
Records together.
Use this checklist to prepare for the next conversation—not to diagnose hazards or carry out mitigation yourself.
1. Stay out of harm’s way
- Leave affected areas if you see a sagging ceiling, suspect electrical danger or face another immediate threat. Call 911 or the appropriate utility from a safe location.
- Do not enter standing water, touch wet electrical equipment or cross a wet area to reach a breaker.
- Keep people and pets away from affected rooms and unknown or contaminated water. Do not use a household vacuum to remove water. Avoid running fans over suspected contamination.
- Stop the water supply only if you know the shutoff and can reach it safely. Otherwise contact an appropriate qualified professional.
2. Prepare for your call
- Property location and a safe callback number.
- When you discovered the water and its source, if known.
- Rooms and materials that appear affected, observed only from safe areas.
- Any known safety concerns, access restrictions or source repairs already arranged.
3. Keep a record
- Photos and videos taken only when safe, plus discovery dates and notes.
- Written scope, pricing, signed authorizations and changes.
- Available moisture readings, drying progress notes and equipment records.
- Invoices, receipts, relevant messages and insurer correspondence.
- Ask before discarding damaged items unless safety requires otherwise.
4. Ask clear questions
- What is included in the proposed work? What requires a separate professional?
- What needs authorization, and how will scope changes be handled?
- What records will be available, and who is the point of contact?
- What should I report to my insurer, and by when? Ask the insurer directly about coverage and payment; neither is guaranteed.
